A Week of Elvis, Baking and Learning at Bales Farm!

We've had another busy week at Bales Farm, filled with learning, creativity, practical activities and plenty of opportunities for our young people to develop new skills. From discovering the history of Elvis Presley to baking from scratch, there has been lots going on across the farm!

Learning About Elvis Presley

This week, our young people have been learning all about Elvis Presley and his place in music history. We explored his life, his music and what it was like growing up during the 1950s and 1960s.

To bring the topic to life, our young people took part in a range of fun activities, including creating mind maps, completing Elvis-themed word searches and colouring sheets, and putting together fact sheets about Elvis and what they had learnt. They also had the chance to experiment with historic dance styles from the 1950s, making the learning interactive and giving everyone a chance to get involved in their own way.

Activities like these provide a fun way for our young people to explore history while developing important skills along the way. They have been practising communication, concentration, creativity and independent working, while also building their confidence when sharing ideas and learning new information.

Cooking Up Some History

As part of our Elvis Presley topic, we also headed into the kitchen to make cornbread. Cornbread was a staple in the Presley household and is closely connected with the simple, comforting flavours of the American South.

Our young people enjoyed getting hands-on with the recipe, from measuring and preparing ingredients to mixing everything together and seeing their finished bake come to life. Cooking activities are a great way to develop practical life skills, while also encouraging independence, following instructions, teamwork and confidence in the kitchen.

It was also a great opportunity to connect our cooking with our history topic, helping the young people understand a little more about the food and culture surrounding Elvis's early life.

Learn to Earn

There has also been plenty happening at Learn to Earn this week, with two of our students getting stuck into some baking of their own. Together, they made cheese scones and a sponge cake completely from scratch.

The pair worked really well together, sharing tasks, communicating and helping each other throughout the process. They practised measuring ingredients, following instructions, mixing and preparing the bakes before finishing off their creations.

Alongside the practical cooking skills, activities like this help our young people develop teamwork, communication, problem-solving and independence in a real-life setting. And, of course, there were some delicious results at the end!

Learning Beyond the Classroom

At Bales Farm, learning doesn't always happen around a desk. Our young people have opportunities throughout the week to learn through practical experiences, creativity, animals, cooking and the world around them.

Being part of everyday activities around the farm gives our young people the chance to practise skills in a way that feels meaningful and enjoyable. Whether they're caring for our animals, getting creative, trying something new in the kitchen or exploring a new topic, every activity can be an opportunity to build confidence, independence and new skills.

It's been another busy week at Bales Farm, with plenty of learning, new experiences and lots of teamwork along the way. We're looking forward to another week of learning, exploring and seeing what our young people get up to next!
