Different doesn’t mean less. It means finding the right environment, approach and opportunities for each young person to learn and grow.

At Bale’s Farm, we understand that every young person is different — and that means they don’t all learn in the same way.

For some, spending six hours a day sitting behind a desk simply isn’t where they learn, grow or feel their best. We believe that some of the most meaningful learning happens when young people are outside, getting stuck in, trying something new and seeing the purpose behind what they are doing.

That’s what makes alternative provision so special. Instead of asking a young person to fit into the way education has always been delivered, we can shape learning around them — their strengths, interests, needs and ambitions.

Because different doesn’t mean less. Sometimes, it means finding the way that finally allows a young person to thrive.

So, how is alternative provision different from traditional education?

In many school settings, learning takes place through structured lessons, timetables and group-based teaching.

At Bale’s Farm, we turn that approach around. Our young people learn by doing, exploring and experiencing things for themselves. They might care for our animals while developing responsibility and communication skills, or measure out animal feed while practising maths through counting, weighing and measuring.

The learning is still purposeful, with clear skills and outcomes at its heart — but the way young people access that learning is different. Sometimes, when learning feels real and meaningful, it becomes something young people can connect with, enjoy and take pride in.

Individualised, Young-Person-Centred Learning

No two young people arrive at Bale’s Farm with exactly the same needs, strengths, interests or experiences.

That means we don't believe that every young person should be expected to learn in exactly the same way.

Every young person at Bale’s Farm has dedicated 1:1 support throughout their day as standard. This means they have a member of staff alongside them to help them access learning, develop independence, navigate challenges and make the most of the opportunities around them.

This individual support allows us to adapt learning to each young person. We can follow their interests, adjust activities, find different ways to communicate and give them the time and encouragement they need to engage.

Most importantly, we look at what a young person can do and build from there.

Individualised learning doesn't mean lowering expectations.

It means finding the right conditions to help a young person meet those expectations.

For one young person, progress might mean completing a qualification. For another, it might mean developing the confidence to communicate with someone new, trying an activity they previously avoided or completing a task independently.

Every step matters.

Learning with purpose

At Bale’s Farm, practical learning isn't separate from education — it is one of the ways we make education meaningful.

Cooking can develop maths, English and independence.

Animal care can develop responsibility, communication and sequencing.

Dog grooming can introduce practical skills and provide an insight into the world of work.

Outdoor learning can develop observation, problem-solving and communication.

Alongside these practical experiences, young people can work towards meaningful qualifications and develop the skills they need for their next steps.

We want young people to leave Bale’s Farm not only having learnt, but having discovered what they are capable of.

At Bale’s Farm, we don't believe there is one right way to learn.

For some young people, a traditional classroom is the environment where they thrive. For others, it isn't.

Alternative provision gives us the opportunity to look at the individual young person and ask:

“What does this young person need in order to learn?”

Sometimes the answer is a classroom.

Sometimes it's a farm, a kitchen, a dog grooming salon, an outdoor space or a different approach to the day.

The environment may be different. The route may be different. The way learning is delivered may be different.

But the ambition for the young person doesn't have to be.

Different doesn't mean less.

Sometimes, it means finding a different way to help a young person learn, grow, discover what they are capable of and move towards their future.
